PAI Injection Molding

PAI injection molding parts

Ensinger is qualified and recommended by Solvay as an approved processor of Torlon® PAI.

There are only a few companies in the world that can process Torlon® PAI by injection molding. Thanks to our many years of experience in processing Torlon® PAI, we have a sound knowledge of this material and the ability to process and cure it correctly. This enables us to achieve and maintain the highest quality standards for finished parts in various industries through Torlon® injection molding.

PAI materials for torlon® injection molding

Polyamide imide, or PAI, is a special polymer used for critical high performance parts that must function under extremely high temperatures and stresses. Typical applications for this material can be found in the aerospace, automotive, semiconductor and medical industries. Torlon® has a very high temperature resistance and can be used in a very wide temperature range, from the cryogenic range (below -150 °C) to temperatures above 260 °C.

We also use special PAI compounds with e.g. carbon or glass fibres to optimally map the requirement profile in the component using the Torlon® molding process.

Dedicated injection molding and curing technology

Our injection molding machines are specially designed for the injection molding of PAI. The choice of machine is critical. Our dedicated injection molding process and all necessary parameters are closely monitored. Special conditions and equipment controls are required to prevent chain extension and cross-linking of the polymer during the Torlon® molding process. The machines are equipped with low-pressure screws and high temperature heaters. The PAI molds are also specially designed and temperature-controlled to suit the material behaviour and the component. This allows us to reliably produce Torlon® components according to your requirements and guarantee the highest quality.

PAI is a material that is very sensitive to moisture and must therefore be kept very dry in storage. We ensure that the PAI compound is thoroughly pre-dried to a defined moisture content and kept at this moisture content throughout the injection molding process.

Post-curing or annealing is a crucial step in developing the optimum physical properties of the finished PAI injection molded part. During the annealing process, the macromolecular chains bond together to form an irreversible three-dimensional network.

Depending on the application, we therefore have digitally monitored furnaces available for the targeted heat treatment of the components, which enable a process-safe sintering and annealing process.

application examples

We develop solutions for your specific application that offer exceptional chemical and high temperature resistance, as required in demanding industries such as semiconductor, automotive or aerospace.
In addition to having great strength, our PAI plastic components have high impact resistance as well.  High resilience, abrasion resistance and wear resistance ensure durable and reliable injection molded products, for example in plain bearing or sealing applications. Modifications with slip-optimising additives further increase the already high wear resistance.
