Special plastics for the aerospace industry

The requirements for new components in the aerospace industry are stringent. The materials used in these components therefore play an important role in the process of innovation and optimisation.
Our aerospace plastics offer a number of advantages over other materials.

In general, these include:

  • Weight saving of up to 60 % compared to aluminum - this significantly reduces energy consumption
  • Better and easier further processing of the component
  • Greater freedom in component design, which in turn reduces manufacturing and assembly costs
  • Good chemical resistance
  • Inherent flame retardancy
  • High specific strength due to fibre reinforced plastics
  • Superior sliding properties with excellent dry running characteristics and freedom from maintenance during use
  • Low outgassing in vacuum and good radiation resistance

Another advantage of thermoplastics is their ability to be modified by fillers and additives. For example, in many cases it is possible to replace metals with fibre reinforced plastics, which offer greater stiffness than unreinforced plastics.

Aerospace requirements

To minimize the risks associated with the use of any material, semi-finished plastic products must meet detailed requirements from end customers and system suppliers. Different specifications apply depending on the area of application. Depending on the manufacturer, there are specially developed material specifications that regulate material properties such as density, mechanical and thermal properties and flammability. Ensinger works very closely with aircraft manufacturers and system suppliers to qualify the plastics for use in aerospace applications.

FAR 25.853 requirments

Aircraft interiors must meet the requirements of FAR 25.853. The materials must pass tests for example on flammability, smoke emission and thermal stress.
Our FAR 25.853 tested semi-finished products (shapes), filaments and composites can be found on the following page:
